佐渡島周辺の浅海の砂底でのみ見られる小型のナマコで、砂の中に潜って生活します。
2014年に当実験所の教職員を含む研究グループにより新種記載されましたが、その後の研究で別種のナマコ（イボカギナマコ）の地域型であることが判明しました。
